VC_FAULT_FATAL - Unable to access the virtual machine configuration:

$

I'm setting up a Horizon 7 test environment on existing infrastructure using an evaluation license.  I have successfully set up an automated / dedicated pool and connected a user to the VM.  I was also able to create and use a manual / floating pool.  However, I can't get an instant clone pool to provision a VM snapshot.  I am getting this error when I attempt to create the pool:

"Error during provisioning: Initial publish failed: Fault type is VC_FAULT_FATAL - Unable to access the virtual machine configuration:  Unable to access file [DS1] XXXX\XXXX.vmx"

The view composer is installed on a separate server from the connection server and I am trying to use a data storage located on the same subnet and within the vcenter.  Has anyone dealt with this error before?  I would really appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Upgrade to Fusion 8.5.8 messed up the application icon in Finder and Dock

I upgraded to Fusion 8.5.8 on macOS Sierra, and it's working great, but the application icon in Finder and in the dock is the generic application icon and not the VMware icon. The strange part is that if I create a folder in Applications and move the application to that folder, then the icon is restored to the normal VMware icon. If I move the application back to the Applications folder, then the icon is changed back to the generic application icon.

I tried deleting the application and reinstalling it, but the icon is still the generic application icon.

I've also tried deleting ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.finder/Cache.db and then rebooting, but that did not help any.

This is the icon that is showing in the dock:

VMware does not modify the configuration of a virtual machines CPU's. It will only reduce the resources it uses depending on environmental settings.

I dont think Esxi need internet connectivity to validate license, none of our Esxi hosts have internet connectivity and the licenses are applied properly.

In that case when licenses are applied , vms will not be suspended.

You may check articles related to licensing requirement.

Apart from that, enabling ports are dependent on your requirement. In general port 443,902,80,8000 are most needed for basic operations.

This looks more like a guest OS issue than an Invoke-VMScript issue then.

Seen other commands through Invoke-VMScript work.

Did you already try with the nmcli command?

nmcli general hostname <your-host-name>

VMware doesn't validate licenses like that. Internally, yes you need certain ports open for different features to work. Externally, there should not be any requirements for Internet through the firewall.

Re: Where is the ESXi OS installed / vCenter Database installed

Sureshkumar,

Thank you for the quick reply.  However, I want to ensure I know the exact installation location of the ESXi OS and the vCenter Server Appliance database.

Using the vSphere Client, I connected to the vCenter Server Appliance.

I selected the ESXi host>Configuration>Storage>Devices

I selected Local Dell Disk (naa.60024e805c68900020e816381af4fbf6)

Look at Devices, I see Local Dell Disk (naa.xxx......fbf6) = vmhba1:C2:T0:L0 and its capacity is 135 GB.

Looking at the Device Details, I see Primary Partitions, I see various data about the size of partitions

Again, using the vSphere Client, I connected to the vCenter Server Appliance.

I selected the ESXi host>Configuration>Storage>Devices

This time, I selected the other Local Dell Disk (naa.60024e805c68900020e8167a1eee30e6)

When I look at the Device Details, I do NOT see a Primary Partitions.

So, when I installed the ESXi OS it installed on Disk 0 of my server?  Also, when I installed vCenter Server Appliance, it also installed on Disk 0 of my server?

I have attached screen prints.

T.J.

Re: How to study for 3V0-622?

I am in the same boat as you. I felt that the DCA had a good blueprint, and I just studied the areas that I needed to. I have rescheduled my 3V0-622 three times already because I don't feel like I know what to study to pass the exam. I almost feel like taking the exam just to see what it is like. Then study and re-take. But that is a waste of $400.

UEM Folder Redirection Not Working

$

Hello Everyone,

I have a Horizon 7 infrastructure running Windows 10 desktops and I'm trying to use folder redirection using UEM 9.2. I'm fairly certain the permission on the shares are correct as the users can browse to and create items in the UEMProfiles share. Also, when the user logs in for the first time, the Desktop, Documents, Favorites, and Appdata folders get created but remain empty. On the workstation side, the location of Desktop, My Documents, Favorites, etc, all are unchanged and point to the default C: directory.

When I check out the UEM logs for that user, I see these messages:

2017-06-30 14:48:11.058 [ERROR] Error 0x80070005 redirecting 'AppData' folder to '\\Server1\UEMProfiles\%Username%\AppData' ('Desktop Items.xml')

2017-06-30 14:48:11.058 [ERROR] Error 0x80070005 redirecting 'Desktop' folder to '\\Server1\UEMProfiles\%Username%\Desktop' ('Desktop Items.xml')

2017-06-30 14:48:11.074 [ERROR] Error 0x80070005 redirecting 'Documents' folder to '\\Server1\UEMProfiles\%Username%\Documents' ('Desktop Items.xml')

2017-06-30 14:48:11.074 [ERROR] Error 0x80070005 redirecting 'Favorites' folder to '\\Server1\UEMProfiles\%Username%\Favorites' ('Desktop Items.xml')

2017-06-30 14:48:11.074 [ERROR] Error 0x80070005 redirecting 'Pictures' folder to '\\Server1\UEMProfiles\%Username%\Pictures' ('Desktop Items.xml')

My Google-foo has failed me on this particular problem so I'm hoping someone has run into this issue and resolved it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,

As the last post in that thread that you reference states, the issue between Fusion and macOS Sierra and <unknown factor> has been corrected in the last update of Fusion (version 8.5.8). The same thread also mentions that nothing has changed in that part of the VMware Fusion installer in a long time, so it is very likely that you are indeed bumping into that same issue on Fusion 7.

Fusion 7 unfortunately has been end of life for a while, so no fixes are expected on that version any more.

Hi There,

I have setup UEM but I am having a problem. On the VM when I try and run FlexEngine.exe -r I get an error.

I followed the install PDF's but I can not figure this out:

When I manually run the program as above I get:

archive argument missing

I am at a loss why this is happening...

Darius,

Thank-you. It's funny, shortly after getting the older version to work with the patch in this thread I saw the new release and removed and reinstalled. It worked perfectly. It is nice to get under the hood every now and then.

Hello,

I can find neither of those devices on the vSAN HCL, can you provide the part number or Product ID to be sure?

You can check what is on the vSAN HCL using the following steps:

Go to this webpage - vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=vsan

Click "Build Your Own based on Certified Components"

In "Search for" Select SSD

Enter any other specifics such as Vendor(Partners), Tier, Device Type etc.

Two issues... reset local admin (VSphere 6.5) and VMWare Updates not working...

$

0

One thing leads to another it seems...

I inherited responsibility for a VSphere installation that I've only been able to work on occasionally.  Regardless of that limitation (which I admit is compounding things), I'm trying to work through a few issues.

I did an upgrade to VCenter to 6.5 (from, if memory serves, a 6.0 version that was flagged for needing security updates).  That upgrade went just fine, vSphere is operational, but now everything is done through the vSphere Web Client.  I don't mind that though it is becoming apparent that my account doesn't have all of the permission I would expect it to have and seem to need it to have in some areas.

I had also added in or was finding in the install the piece I was most interested in getting operational - VMWare Update Manager.  Yay, or, uh, not...

In trying to get updates to work, I'm getting a note saying the host can't connect to download content.  I've confirmed firewalls or not interfering but am still not getting there.  Searching through articles, it seems the issue would be that the host isn't configured properly for DNS.  OK, I start looking to check the hosts configuration and seem to be finding I don't have enough rights on my own named account to do that configuration or at least I'm not finding where that configuration is done through the vSphere Web Client *when I am logged in with my named account*.

So... two issues, one, I need to reset the local admin password and two, I'd like to get VMWare Update Manager functioning.  I'm hopeful that once I could check the DNS configuration on the host, I'd find the source of my issue for that part.  But the local admin issue is driving me crazy.  I followed instructions that I found in articles here to use the tool (vdcadmintool) to take care of that process.  I fire up that tool, see numbered menu.  Choose 3 "Reset Account Password".  It prompts for account UPN.  I enter in administrator@vsphere.local but that is apparently not what is being sought or at least that has no effect that I can see except to result in this message:

3

Please enter account UPN : administrator@vsphere.local

VmDirForceResetPassword failed (9106)

For the record, the system I'm working on is a participant in a domain where I am not a domain administrator.  I am an administrator of the server (which is a member server in the domain).

If any other information is needed to help troubleshoot this issue, please advise and I'll add in what I can.

Thanks for any assistance that can be lent here.

vCenter HA with Embedded Platform Controller Service

$

Hi All,

I'm trying to better understand what happens in a VCHA deployment with an embedded PSC.

From this KB Supported and deprecated topologies for VMware vSphere 6.5 (2147672) | VMware KB

In the 7th example they show a VCHA with Embedded PSC, though the limitation is that the PSC doesn't replicate. What are the ramifications if you lost the PSC on the Active vCenter node. If you're just connecting the PSC to an Active Directory identity source, could you utilize the embedded PSC knowing that it doesn't support replication and configure the same AD identify source on both embedded PSC instances?

Thank you,

Reza
