vCenter - cannot install patches via software-packages stage --iso

$

My vCenter server appliance shows it is "Version 6.0.0 Build 14406112".

I have tried to update it to the latest patch VC-6.0.0U3j-Appliance-PatchProduct:VC Version:6.0.0

Using .iso file:  VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-6.0.0.31000-14518061-patch-FP

and have also tried to update it with using the patch file for 3c  ( VC-6.0.0U3c-ApplianceProduct:VC Version:6.0.0 )

Using .iso file: VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-6.0.0.30300-7037817-patch-FP

I need at least the 3C patch to get around a vcenter Client Integration Plugin "not working" problem.

I keep getting this message on both patch packages.

Command> software-packages stage --iso

[2020-01-31T18:02:14.031] : Staging software update packages from ISO

[2020-01-31T18:02:14.031] : ISO mounted successfully

[2020-01-31T18:02:14.031] : Packages in appliance are up to date with update payload, Nothing to stage

[2020-01-31T18:02:14.031] : ISO unmounted successfully

Can anyone tell me how to get around this issue?

Thanks.

Did you give that FTPUser Full Control on the FTP folder and all it's subfolders?

Next VMware Perl SDK version

Hi VMware team,

The last Perl SDK 6.7 was released April 2018 and I'm having some issues while using it:

Can't load class 'ArrayOfDatastoreEventArgument' at /usr/share/perl5/VMware/VIMRuntime.pm line 52, <IFS> line 11.

Can't load class 'HostSubSpecificationUpdateEvent' at /usr/share/perl5/VMware/VIMRuntime.pm line 52, <IFS> line 51.

Undefined subroutine &HostSubSpecificationUpdateEvent::get_property_list called at /usr/share/perl5/VMware/VICommon.pm line 2543

I understand these are fixed in a future release according to https://github.com/vmware/vsphere-automation-sdk-.net/issues/19

Do you have a roadmap of when the next VMware Perl SDK version will be released?

I appreciate your help.

Best regards,

Miguel Molina

Sebastian,

We are using Exchange 2016 CU15. Our users are pretty vocal and I have not heard any complaints about the read/unread issue, though I know it was problematic before 13.3. Have you verified the users that are complaining are on at least 13.3? We had someone complain and they were on 13.1.3 not 13.3.

HI everybody, we deployed a linked clone desktop pool with a separate LUN for the replica datastore, by mistake we selected the wrong datastore. Will the rebalance option work to perform the change ?  or a different procedure is required.

thanks in advance

Re: ESXI 6.7: VM migration between hosts not possible if the VM has a snapshot "Unable to enumerate all disks"

After diving into this issue some more it turns out it was an issue with the VMFS versions. Host A has VMFS5 and host B has VMFS6. These VMFS versions don't support the same type of snapshots!

Kind of ridiculous that VMware didn't at least format a proper error message when this occurs, because it must be a common issue, but oh well!

VM customization does not work until booted once

Hello,

We're running VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 13006603 with vCenter 6.7.0 Build13639324 with SLES 15 SP1 guests. Our guests have open-vm-tools pre-installed.

I've tried at least two ways to customize Guest OS,

1., Deploy OVF template from Content Library and check 'Customize the operating system' tickbox and select the customization,

2., Simply import OVF (without Content Library) and after that customize it by right click, Guest OS, Customize Guest OS.

I get various errors mentioning that customization is not supported, such as:

Customization of the guest operating system 'sles15_64Guest' is not supported in this configuration. Microsoft Vista (TM) and Linux guests with Logical Volume Manager are supported only for recent ESX host and VMware Tools versions. Refer to vCenter documentation for supported configurations.

I have noticed that in "Summary" tab, it says VMware Tools: Not running, not installed.

Once the guest is powered on and boot procedure progresses until open-vm-tools is started, vSphere recognizes existence of open-vm-tools. However, customization is not possible when the VM is already powered on. With this at hand, the first startup is destined to fail without network addresses. After that, when VM is powered off, customization can be applied and in subsequent boot, everything works "like it should".

I have two questions:

1., Is there a way to circumvent this "first boot" and convince vSphere that open-vm-tools is available in the guest and apply customization already before the first boot? Can this information somehow be imported along with the OVF?

2., If there is a VApp of multiple VMs, is it expected that user has to select and apply VM customization templates individually to those VMs or can those be assigned when the VApp is deployed?

Thank you for your answers!

The article I pointed to earlier has that.
It's the Set-Acl cmdlet in there.

Funny you should mention that @jwkrock I'm getting the same error on a handful of Android devices today. The vast majority of my devices respond with no issue but have noticed about a dozen of them haven't taken a Hub or Boxer update in quite some time so I tried to manually force it. When I did I saw the error you mentioned on about 7 of the 12 devices that were out of date.

Re: Container Enrollment Help or suggestions?

So we're still in this same boat.  The steps for migration are fine and work seamlessly for iOS, but there's nothing so easy for Android.  That's another story.

I'll be damned if I can get an app catalog to show up for a "Hub Registered" user that enrolls anew. I migrated a test user, and decided to enroll a new test user with Hub into our old Container OG.  This worked well, but now I have a "Hub Registered" device that only has Hub.  I can't send a web clip to it with the app catalog, I can't get to the app catalog with Safari, the VPP apps that I try to deliver either "on demand" (no catalog, duh) or automatically don't work.  There's no catalog built into the iOS Hub app for Registered Mode.

Is the purpose of this "migration" strictly to kill Container, but really not have new users enroll in anything other than full-blown MDM managed Hub?

Thanks I will have a look at that over the weekend and let you know.

How to deliver apps to "Hub Registered" iOS devices (formerly Container)?

$

I wrote this on 1/31/20... so this isn't something migrated.  On-Prem, v1909.

I'm in the process of testing out the whole container migration and it works just fine for iOS users that already have Container. However, enrolling NEW users with the whole concept of Hub Registered mode isn't going quite as well. I enrolled a test user with Hub into WS1 and basically followed the same process we used to use for Container users. The device landed in the Container OG and is in Hub Registered mode and marked as Employee Owned, all of that is cool. My problem is... I can't seem to deliver apps to the device.

Inside Hub, there's no App Catalog shortcut.

No Catalog shortcut gets delivered with the Hub app at enrollment (neither does the Privacy shortcut now that I think about it)

Assigning VPP apps and making them Automatic never delivers the apps or alerts the user

Assigning Public apps and making them Automatic never delivers the apps or alerts the user

Assigning VPP or Public apps and making them On Demand doesn't do anything since there's no App Catalog.

I can't get to the  App Catalog through Safari.

Anyone else done this successfully?

A potential solution, for at least question #1 seems to be to start vmtoolsd during the image creation process, which happens outside VMware in our case.
